Beating the Heat with Your Canine Companion

July and August are typically the hottest months in our County. Please follow these important tips to keep your four-legged friend safe while enjoying our outdoor areas:

1: Follow the “7 Second Rule” when walking your dog.

Place the back of your hand on the sidewalk/road for 7 seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog’s paws!

2: Use protective gear while walking your dog, such as booties or paw wax.

3: Walk your dog during the cooler hours of the day (early morning/late evening).

4: Bring water and a collapsible bowl. Keep your dog hydrated!

5: Avoid over-exercising your dog during the hotter hours of the day. Give them time to cool off and rest.

6: NEVER leave your dog in your car! The inside temperature of your car can increase by more than 10 degrees in just minutes, even with the windows cracked. In Wasatch County, it is considered animal cruelty to leave an animal in a hot vehicle. Municipal Code 8.03.11 (section G) states:

Confines an animal in an unattended motor vehicle when the interior of the vehicle is 90 degrees Fahrenheit or hotter; the animal is confined for a period of 10 minutes or longer; and there are multiple indications that the animal is in distress related to the temperature of the vehicle.”

If you need to run to the store, leave your furry friend at home!
